Elizabeth Hartley

Elizabeth Harrison Hartley, 82, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., a longtime summer visitor to Great Barrington, died Tuesday at the Life Care Center in Ocala, Fla. Born in Waterbury, Conn., on Sept. 26, 1918, daughter of Ransford R. and Maude Cary Harrison, she grew up in Woodbury, Conn., and attended schools there. She graduated from LaSalle Junior College in 1938, and had spent summers and vacations visiting her aunt, Flora Cary, who died in 1993, in Housatonic. During World War II, Mrs. Hartley worked as a secretary in Intelligence for Navy Department in Boston. She married Earle W. Hartley in Waterbury, Conn., in 1942, and returned to Woodbury after World War II. They divorced in 1967 after 25 years of marriage. In the early 1970s, she moved to New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Mrs. Hartley was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Woodbury and the First Resistance Chapter DAR in Great Barrington. She was involved in many civic projects in Woodbury, including raising money for United Way. She leaves two daughters, Elizabeth Ramsey of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Sally Hartley of Ocala, and two grandchildren. Elizabeth Harrison Hartley, 82, died Jan. 16, 2001. Beloved mother of Betsy and Sally; and grandmother of Attorney Brett Hartley and Christopher Hartley. Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Ray Wilson of St. James Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Housatonic. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in care of the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
