Ian Rodgers

Ian Rodgers, 21, of Monterey, a fireman apprentice with the U.S. Coast Guard stationed in Kodiak, Alaska, died Saturday in Kodiak from injuries suffered in a hiking accident. Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 22, 1980, son of "Buddy" and Cathy Molenko Rodgers, he attended local schools and was a 1999 graduate of Lenox Memorial High School. In high school, he was a member of the soccer, alpine skiing and baseball teams, was a two-time captain of the ski team. He was selected for the All-Berkshire ski team in his senior year. In the winter, he skied daily at Butternut Basin Ski Area, where he was a member of their ski team, and competed in many local and regional events. Mr. Rodgers joined the Coast Guard this year and received the rating as a fireman apprentice on July 20. He had been stationed at Kodiak Island since August. He was a member of the Monterey Fire Department since 1995 when he joined the junior firefighter program. He became a full-time member in 1998. Besides his parents at home, he leaves a sister, Rachel Rodgers of Dennisville, N.J., and his companion, Lillian Busch of Camby, Ore. Funeral services will be held at a time and date to be announced.
