Walter Green

Walter Green, 62, of 11 Riverside Drive, New York City, died Sunday at home after a 10-year battle with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS). He was the brother of Stephan Green of West Stockbridge. Born in Queens, N.Y., on Feb. 13, 1939, son of Charles and Jeanette Goldstein Green, he received a bachelor of arts degree in textiles from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. An executive in the fashion industry since the early 1970s, Mr. Green was president of Burberry Ltd. in New York, retiring in 1996. He had also served as president of Joseph Abboud. He was a member of the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue. An activist for ALS research, he was the second recipient of the Helen Hayes Commissioner's Cup, given to him in 1999 for his inspiration to others and for his courage and determination. He enjoyed sailing, hiking and running, and once had entered the Great Josh Billings RunAground as a bicyclist. Besides his brother, he leaves his wife, the former Susan Ross; four daughters, Nancy Freiman, Amy Ogulnick, Chelsea Green and Alexandra Green, all of New York City; a son, Matthew Ross of New York City; a sister, Marsha Green of New Rochelle, N.Y.; another brother, Michael Green of Scarsdale, N.Y., and six grandchildren.
