Elizabeth McCormick

Elizabeth DeCane McCormick, 81, of 77 Bull Hill Road died Sunday at home. Born in Somerville on Aug. 14, 1920, daughter of Arthur and Elizabeth Nugent DeCane, she attended schools there and graduated from Boston University. Mrs. McCormick was employed as director of personnel and purchasing at the Berkshire County House of Correction, initially serving under the administration of the late Sheriff John D. Courtney and continuing under Sheriff Carmen C. Massimiano. She retired Oct. 3, 1986. Prior to that, she was employed by Monsanto Corp. and, after moving to the Berkshires in 1946, by Berkshire Life Insurance Co. She enjoyed visiting the ocean, tending her cats, reading, and raising flowers and vegetables. Her husband, John C. McCormick, former Lanesboro police chief, whom she married Jan. 20, 1946, at St. James' Church in Medford, died July 26, 1992. She leaves a daughter, Ann M. Flint of Becket; two sons, John M. McCormick and Kevin D. McCormick, both of Lanesboro, and two grandsons. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor of St. Joseph's Church, officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday morning beginning at 9 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either HospiceCare of the Berkshires or to the Berkshire Humane Society, both in care of the funeral home.
