John J. Wajda

John J. Wajda, 93, of 10 High St. died Sunday morning at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Adams on Nov. 2, 1908, son of Thomas and Katherine Alibozek Wajda, he attended Adams schools, including the Renfrew and Plunkett schools. Mr. Wajda was employed by the Boston & Maine Railroad for several years. He then worked for the T.J. Harvey Construction Co. and Petricca Industries of Pittsfield. In 1940, he became employed by GE for 29 years, retiring in 1971. He was a communicant of St. Thomas Aquinas Church and a member of Notre Dame-St. Thomas Parish. He also was a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners Clubs. During his youth, he was an outstanding baseball player and held the distinction of being the only surviving member of the Hillside Baseball Club, which was known and admired in the New England sports theater. He enjoyed spinning fishing and was a fan of the New York Yankees. His wife, the former Mary A. Martowski, whom he married Nov. 29, 1935, died Jan. 19, 1990. He leaves a son, John T. "Jack" Wajda of Longwood, Fla.; a daughter, Nancy G. Shepherd of Dalton; two sisters, Anelia Lansing of Albany, N.Y., and Estelle Kurpiel of Latham, N.Y.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and his caregiver, George Dimitropolis of Adams. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated for his life on Thursday, Dec. 27, at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Aquinas Church. It will be preceded by a prayer service at the MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME, Thursday at 9:15 a.m. Calling hours at the McBride Funeral Home will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted gratefully.
