Celia W. Shute

Celia Weltman Shute, 96, of Richmond and Devonshire Estates, Lenox, died Tuesday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 17, 1905, she was the daughter of Nathan and Sarah Greenblood Weltman. An accomplished pianist, Mrs. Shute was employed at a New York broadcasting station and later was a special education teacher in the New York City School System for many years. She moved to Richmond in 1970. She was a member of Knesset Israel Synagogue and a supporter of formal Jewish education. She served as an honorary director of the Sinai Academy of the Berkshires. She established an endowment fund at the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires for local youth to attend Israeli programs. She was predeceased by her son, Dr. Michael Nathaniel Shute, who died July 13, 1991. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Knesset Israel Cemetery on Peck's Road, with Rabbi David Small, spiritual leader of Knesset Israel Synagogue, officiating. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Dr. Michael Nathaniel Shute Endowment established at the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires, in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, which is handling arrangements.
