Erna Burghardt

Erna Burghardt, 91, of Boynton Beach, Fla., formerly of Great Barrington, died Tuesday morning at Heartland Care Center in Boynton Beach. Born in Great Barrington on April 25, 1910, daughter of Edward and Bertha Neotzel Koger, she attended local schools and graduated from the former Searles High School in 1928. She married Robert Lyman Burghardt on Dec. 15, 1928, at Sacred Heart Church in Mount Vernon, N.Y. They moved to Mount Vernon in 1928 and then to Greenwich, Conn., in 1931. They spent summers in the Berkshires and moved to Great Barrington in 1974. Mrs. Burghardt was employed as a salesperson at the Chancy D-eliea store in Greenwich and also taught rug-hooking workshops at Sturbridge Village. She was the director of the McGown Teachers Workshop for 20 years, starting in 1969. The workshop was held every August at Worcester Polytechnical Institute. She was a member of AARP, the National Guild of Pearl McGown, the Hookcrafters Guild and the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Transportation Union. Her husband, Robert, died Jan. 15, 1997. She leaves three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret Zikias, who died in February 1993. Services will be held at a later date.
