Kitty Shumar

Kitty Shumar, 85, of Taconic Avenue died Friday at home. Born in Toledo, Ohio, on April 24, 1916, daughter of James and Genevieve Valiquette Hughes, she graduated from Lapeer (Mich.) High School in 1933. She moved to Midland, Mich., in 1939 and to Great Barrington in 1994. Mrs. Shumar volunteered with Recovery Inc., a self-help mental health organization headquartered in Chicago. She traveled across the country and around the world training leaders, served on its national board of directors and led a group in her own community. She also worked in real estate and was a driver for the Red Cross during World War II. She was a member of Old Parish Church in Sheffield She and her husband, Richard Shumar, celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary Sept. 11. Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Deborah Harris of Great Barrington; a son, Peter Shumar of Traverse City, Mich., and four grandchildren. She also enjoyed her cat, Ho Baby. Her brother, James Hughes, died in 1996. Mrs. Shumar's family deeply appreciates the devotion of her care givers. A memorial service will be held in the spring.
