Penny Fall

Professor Penny J. Fall, 60, of Chestertown, Md., a native of Pittsfield, died Dec. 22 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Chestertown. Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 10, 1941, daughter of the late Kingsley Rex Fall, former managing editor of The Eagle, and Jessie Shanks Fall, she was a 1959 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in 1963 from Sargent College at Boston University, where she was valedictorian of the class, and a master's degree from Boston College in 1967. She began her career as a physical education instructor at the University of Texas in Austin and also taught at Brandeis University. From 1969 to the present, she was employed by Washington College in Chestertown, Md., where she was a tenured professor of the physical education department and senior women's administrator. She coached volleyball, tennis, softball and cheerleading. In 1984, Miss Fall was recognized by the governor of Maryland for her efforts to achieve gender equity in Maryland's schools through the first 10 years of the Title IX Education Amendment. She was inducted into the Washington College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. An emergency medical technician, she devoted time and effort to the enhancement of the Kent and Queen Anne's Rescue Squad. She also pioneered for the introduction of women as rescue squad members. She was active in baseball, tennis, swimming and football scrimmaging. A golfer, Miss Fall was the women's champion at the Country Club of Pittsfield several times. She won the Ladies' Allied Berkshire County Golf Championship in 1962 and 1973, the Pittsfield City Championship in 1968, the Edith Noblitt Baker Tournament in 1970, the Massachusetts State Tournament of Women's Club Champions in 1971 and, with John Williams, was the Allied Scotch championship winner four times. She also competed in the U.S. Women's Amateur Tour in 1975. She leaves a sister, Holly F. Malarney of Chelsea. A visitation was held Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at FELLOWS, HELFENBEIN AND NEWMAN FUNERAL HOME, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, Md., which is handling arrangements. I realize that it has been a very long time since Penny left us. I did not find this internet obituary release on her until recently. I first learned of her fatal accident shortly after its occurance. I was shocked. I met Penny and her father 'Rex' when I was a caddy at the Pittsfield Country Club back in the early 60s. I caddied for Penny many times and always enjoyed her humor and gamesmanship of the sport. I admired that she could laugh at her failed shots, stuff the club back into her bag that I carried and go on to the next shot. I did not realize it until after her death that we both were attending college in Boston at the same time, and that we graduated in the same year in 1967. The fact that I can remember her and her dad after all of these years is testimony to the fact that they were wonderful people. Members (of the PCC) that I respected then, and people who left a positive image in my mind after all of these years. Penny, in the near future, I look forward to carrying you bag, but please remember to keep your head down and follow thru.
