Frank H. Bailey

Frank H. Bailey, 82, of Alum Hill Road died Tuesday afternoon at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Sheffield on April 13, 1919, son of Ross Bailey Sr. and Mina Bayley Bailey, he attended local schools. He was a World War II Army veteran and served as a staff sergeant in the 25th Armored Engineer Battalion. He fought in both Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, where he received the Purple Heart with three clusters, the Bronze Star and a presidential citation. Mr. Bailey was employed by Sheffield Plastics for 16 years, retiring in 1984. He had previously worked for Conklin Quarry and for Community Service, both in Canaan, Conn. He was a member of Grace Bible Church, where he was a former deacon, and of the James A. Modolo Post 8348 and Disabled Veterans of America. He enjoyed gardening, tending to his lawn, and collecting bells and canes. He leaves his wife of 16 years, the former Mary Pignataro; three daughters, Valerie J. Pickert and Heather M. Gunther, both of Ashley Falls, and Christine D. Johnston of Sheffield; two sons, John E. Bailey of Mount Washington and USMC 1st Lt. William E. Gunther, stationed in Okinawa, Japan; a sister, Anne Bachetti of Sheffield; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Bailey is predeceased by two brothers, Ross E. Bailey Jr. and Sheridan Bailey, and two sisters, Helen L. McLean and Mary E. Coon. Funeral services for Frank Bailey will be Friday, Jan. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Grace Bible Church, Clayton Road, Ashley Falls, with the Rev. Ed Eastman, pastor, officiating. A private burial will follow at a later date. The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 10, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME. Contributions in Mr. Bailey's memory may be made to either St. Jude's Children's Hospital or to Feed the Children through the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
