Winifred Alexander

Winifred R. Alexander, 73, of 42 Drive D, East Otis, died yesterday afternoon at home. Born in Dalton on Jan. 28, 1928, daughter of Bernard and Myrtle Plouffe Kirchner, she moved to Egremont as a teen-ager and graduated from the former Searles High School. She also attended Berkshire Business School. She resided in Chester from 1948 until 1966, when she moved to Pittsfield. She moved to East Otis in 1980. Mrs. Alexander was employed by Home Gas in Great Barrington for many years, retiring in 1991. She was a communicant of St. Mary of the Lakes Church in Otis and a member and former secretary of the Knox Trail Snow Riders Club. She also was a member of the Pocahantos Club of Chester. She volunteered for the Otis Council on Aging and was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed bowling. She leaves her husband, Leonard R. Alexander, whom she married June 17, 1948; four sons, Glenn P. Alexander of Jupiter, Fla., Philip F. Alexander of Ashburn, Va., Gregg J. Alexander of East Otis and Kurt H. Alexander of Housatonic; a daughter, Rita H. Butler of Merritt Island, Fla.; two brothers, Richard Kirchner of Sheffield and Eugene Kirchner of Pittsfield; two sisters, Laurette Herting of Fort Plain, N.Y., and Rose Alfano of Torrington, Conn., and seven grandchildren. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10 at St. Mary of the Lakes Church in Otis. Calling hours at KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 3 Main St., Lee, will be Sunday from 2 to 5. Burial will be in the spring in Pine Hill Cemetery in Chester. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
