Marcella R. Plante

Marcella Roxie Plante, 88, of 8 Highland Ave. died Sunday at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in Adams on Oct. 19, 1913, daughter of Elrich D. and Emma Rabsal Gaines, she was a 1931 graduate of the former Adams High School, where she was a member of the women's basketball and gymnastic teams. Mrs. Plante was employed by the former Brightwater Paper Co. and served as secretary of the local union of the Textile Workers of America. She also worked at the former W.B. Plunkett Hospital and was a secretary for Drs. Mayo and Rowe. She retired in 1976. She was a communicant of the Parish of Notre Dame-St. Thomas and a member of its choir. She was a member of the Adams Turners and the Adams Quilters, and enjoyed reading, needlework, crafts and doing crossword puzzles. Her husband, Gerard G. Plante, whom she married May 27, 1935, died July 21, 1983. She leaves a son, Alan R. Plante of Gorham, N.H.; a daughter, Marjorie P. Steinberg of Ossining, N.Y.; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, David Plante. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated tomorrow, Jan. 23, at 11 in Notre Dame Church. The Mass will be preceded by a prayer service at 10:30 at MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Liberty St., Adams. Visitation hours will be today from 5 to 8. Cremation will follow and an inurnment service at Bellevue Cemetery is planned for Saturday, Jan. 26, at 1. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Notre Dame-St. Thomas Choir Fund in care of Box 231, Adams, MA 01220, or for the Maryknoll Fathers at Maryknoll, NY 10545.
