Sylvia M. Briggs, 79

SAVOY, Mass. —

Sylvia M. (Swift) Briggs, 79, long time resident of Savoy, passed away on Monday, June 21, 2021, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, due to complications following emergency surgery.

She was born in Florida, MA on July 20, 1941, a daughter of the late Wilfred and Nellie (Brown) Swift. Upon graduation from Drury High School in 1959, she completed radiology studies in Boston.

Sylvia served as Postmaster in Drury, MA for more than a decade, until its closing in 1989. Soon after, she operated the Bear Swamp Visitor Center at the former New England Power Company and prior to retirement was employed in the Imaging and Medical Records departments at the former North Adams Regional Hospital.

She was a member of the Florida Baptist Church and the Savoy Senior Citizens. Sylvia was a lifelong Red Sox fan, enjoyed her daily crossword puzzles, vacationing in Maine and traveling to spend time with family. She appreciated life in country and living in Savoy, where she and her husband established their home in 1964.

Sylvia leaves behind her husband of nearly 60 years, Wesley H. Briggs, Jr., whom she married on October 1, 1961; her daughter, Karyn Stavaski and her husband Paul of Cheshire; a sister Cynthia Ryan of Florida; a brother Dean Swift and his wife Frances of Arizona and many nieces and nephews.

Sylvia was the gentle strength and driving force of her family. Though her most successful accomplishment was being an exceptional Mom. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

The family extends our deepest gratitude to Dr James Feeney and the CCU nurses at Berkshire Medical Center for providing extraordinary comfort and care during this difficult time.

A memorial service for Sylvia Briggs will be held on Monday, June 28th at 12:00 Noon in the PACIOREK FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams.

Burial will follow in the Florida Church Cemetery, Florida, MA.

Memorial donations may be made to the Derek Clark Educational Fund through the funeral home.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Sylvia was such a sweet woman and watched over my sister Eileen while they were roommates at Williamstown Commons. It touches our hearts that donations were to be made to my nephew’s educational fund for his children that he left too soon. What a thoughtful thing to do! Thank you Sylvia and Rest In Peace❤️

I worked with Sylvia in the NARH Imaging Department. She was always smiling, kind and helpful. I liked our chats and the laughs shared. May God comfort Sylvia’s family and friends during this time, and may your sadness be replaced with joy as you remember special times with her.

I had the pleasure of working with Sylvia in the medical records department at NARH. She was a beautiful lady with a wonderful sense of humor. And boy she made the best strawberry jello and pretzel dessert. My deepest sympathy to her family

Dear Cynthia, Dean and Karen
We all knew Sylvia as a neighbor and then "owner" of our grandparents home in Savoy. Our Mom would be very sad to hear of her passing. They were very good friends as long as they both lived close. I (Marilyn) stopped in to see Sylvia a few years ago when in the area. It was a great visit. So happy I did that. Our condolences to all. We will have memories of a great neighbor and friend.

Dear Karyn, I’m so so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. I’m thankful to have felt like I knew her a little in the stories you’ve shared the last few weeks. I will tell you this…she raised a fantastic daughter! You are an absolute blessing to me and so many others. I treasure our friendship and the encouragement you have always provided me. I hope this comes as a bit of encouragement for you. I am praying for you and your entire family as you navigate this new way of life. I know these last months and years have been a challenge and my heart aches for you!! I can’t say I can empathize but I can surely “walk” the journey with you…even if from NC! I’m here for you in any way I can be. I love you, friend! And I thank God for you!

It is with sadness to hear of the loss of Sylvia, she was always a gentle and caring person and enjoyed her time as postmaster, greeting and sharing news with folks. It was in the building she grew up in and was next door to my garage. Her cat would come to visit me and sleep in the sunlight on my desk. Our condolence with love to her family
