Robert McAvoy

Robert W. McAvoy, 59, of Sunrise Village died Saturday morning at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield following an auto accident in which his vehicle hit a tree on Old Dalton Road in Hinsdale. He served several terms as selectman, beginning in 1988. Born in Northampton on Aug. 4, 1942, son of Bernard S. and Hazel Torrey McAvoy, he moved to Peru in 1950 and was a 1960 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He lived in Pittsfield for several years before returning to Peru in 1980. He served in the Air Force from 1961 to 1965. Mr. McAvoy was employed as a mechanic for many years by the former Clark-Aiken Matek plant in Lee until it closed. He also served as a union steward for many years. He had been disabled for the past several years. He was a member of Peru Congregational Church, where he served as a trustee, and a former treasurer of the Hilltop Association. He leaves a brother, James A. McAvoy of Peru. There will be no calling hours for Robert W. McAvoy. Services will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Hinsdale Ambulance Fund in care of BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 525 Main St., Dalton, Mass., which is in charge of arrangements.
