James B. Hayes

James Bernard Hayes, 78, of 24 Imperial Ave. died Sunday while visiting his daughter, Bernadine Helen Hayes, in Houston. Born in Great Barrington on Feb. 4, 1923, son of William F. and Helen E. Knight Hayes, he was a graduate of St. Joseph Central High School. He was a 1949 graduate of St. Bonaventure University with a master of arts degree in English. He served in the Army in the 5th Infantry Division Artillery during World War II. After his military service, Mr. Hayes was employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and by General Electric Co. He then was employed the Massachusetts Highway Department in Lenox for more than 30 years, retiring in 1984. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of St. Francis' Church. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He enjoyed playing golf and was a longtime member of the Berkshire Hills Country Club. He also enjoyed poetry, gardening and televised sports. His wife, the former Mary Terese Delaney, whom he married May 14, 1966, at St. Francis Xavier Church, died Dec. 5, 1994. Besides his daughter in Houston, he leaves two other daughters, Barbara A. Gardner-Figuereo of Pittsfield and M. Betsy Smith of Dalton; three sons, Robert F. Burt of Medway, Thomas A. Burt of Pittsfield and William A. Burt of West Allis, Wis.; a brother, the Rev. Charles Hayes of Butler, N.J.; a sister, Elizabeth Tetreault of Putnam, Conn.; nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, at 8:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Hayes may be made to the Eagles Band in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield 01201.
