Sophie T. Shugrue

Sophie T. Shugrue, 72, of 164 Balance Rock Road died yesterday at Springside of Pittsfield. Born in Uxbridge on March 20, 1929, daughter of Albert and Katherine Wocjick Knapik, she attended schools there and was a 1948 graduate of Uxbridge High School. She came to Pittsfield in 1972 and moved to West Springfield in 1981, where she lived until moving to Lanesboro in 1995. Mrs. Shugrue was employed as a time and motion supervisor at the Backmann Worsted Mill in Uxbridge until she married Walter P. Shugrue on May 2, 1953. She was an accomplished watercolor and oil artist, and enjoyed needlework and gardening. Besides her husband of 49 years, she leaves three sons, Brian F. Shugrue of Mill Creek, Wash., attorney Timothy J. Shugrue of the town of Washington and Joseph P. Shugrue of Lanesboro; four daughters, Colleen S. Foody of Stephentown, N.Y., Pamela A. Shugrue and Rosemary Vinette, both of Pittsfield, and Ann Marie Vogel of West Springfield; a sister, Marion Krawczyk of North Smithfield, R.I., and 18 grandchildren. Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mark's Church; burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
