Donald J. Smith

Donald J. Smith, 70, of 24 Silver St. died Monday, Feb. 18, at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Conn., after a long illness. Born in Glen Ridge, N.J., on Nov. 9, 1931, son of Frank and Margaret Fahey Smith, he was a graduate of Bloomfield High School and Montclair State Uni-versity, both in New Jersey. A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he was awarded the China Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal, among others. He was employed as a teacher at Washington Elementary School in West Orange, N.J., until his retirement. He moved to Great Barrington in 1995. He worked and was in part-nership with his twin, Ronald F. Smith, in the recording industry and managed various singing groups. An avid film and theatergoer, he was very knowledgeable about art forms. Besides his brother, of Dan-bury, Conn., he leaves another brother, Kenneth W. Smith of New York, N.Y. Services were held in Bloomfield. N.J., with burial in Upper Montclair. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Association or, in appreciation of his years in teaching and great love of children, to a children's organization of one's choice.
