Billy Madewell Jr.

Billy Dean Madewell Jr., 53, of 45 Spring St. died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center. Prior to moving to North Adams a year ago, he had resided in Adams and Pittsfield. Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 14, 1948, son of Billy Dean Madewell Sr. and the late Helen Higgins Madewell Frank, he was educated in Pittsfield schools. A hospital aide for many years, he had been employed at Albany Veterans Administration Hospital and the Northampton Veterans Administration Hospital and later at North Adams Regional Hospital. He retired several years ago because of ill health. Mr. Madewell enjoyed being with people and helping others. He liked bingo and volunteered at bingo games at Notre Dame Church in Adams and was a former member of the American Legion Post 68. Besides his father, of South Modesto, Calif., he leaves a son, Billy Dean Madewell III of Pittsfield; a daughter, Shelley Alado of Pittsfield; two sisters, Lillian C. Ketcham of Pittsfield and Cynthia L. Hill of Adams, and six grandchildren. He was also predeceased by his stepfather, James Frank. Funeral services for Mr. Madewell will be Saturday, March 2, at 8:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, Pittsfield, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Mark's Church, celebrated by the Rev. William Eckert, parochial vicar. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 5 to 8 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind in care of the Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
