Walter L. Stetson

Walter L. Stetson, 82, of Chestnut Street, Winsted, Conn., formerly of Sandisfield, died Sunday at Adams House Health Care Center in Torrington, Conn. Born in West Hartland, Conn., on Aug. 7, 1919, son of Leon and Evelyn Fairbanks Stetson, he attended schools in West Hartland. After marrying, he lived in Sandisfield for many years. Mr. Stetson was a World War II Army veteran and served with the 507th Coast Artillery Battallion in the Southern Philippines and on Luzon. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the town of Winchester, Conn., until his retirement. He was a member of the Kehow Tribe of Redmen, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 296 and the American Legion post in the New Boston section of Sandisfield. He leaves his wife of 54 years, the former Dorothy Nardi; a son, Leon Delbert Stetson of Barkhamsted; two brothers, Milton Stetson of California and Frank Stanton of Las Vegas; two sisters, Mildred Moore of Mesa, Ariz., and Hazel Simons of Winsted; six grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Frances Soldan. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 from MALONEY FUNERAL HOME, 55 Walnut St., with the Rev. Timothy Yeadon, pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Forest View Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9. Contributions may be made in memory of his daughter, Frances Soldan, to the American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Road, Wilton, CT 06897-2523.
