NEW ASHFORD, Mass. —  Mary Jane Phelps Zimmerman, 92, of Norwalk, CT, died on Thursday, February 12, 2026.

Born in Pittsfield, MA on May 19, 1933, she was the daughter of Beatrice (Nichols) and Harley P. Phelps. She attended local schools in New Ashford and Williamstown, and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Purdue University.

Mary Jane married the late Norman A. Zimmerman and together raised 4 children. She was a devoted wife, mother, and expert gardener.

Mary Jane is survived by her four sons, Marshall (Karen) Zimmerman of Wake Forest, NC, Jon (Mary Prosser) Zimmerman of Alpharetta, GA, Jeffrey (Irene) Zimmerman of Norwalk, CT, Peter (Wendi) Zimmerman of Randolph, NJ. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Katy Lynch of Pitman, NY, Brian Zimmerman of Westerville, OH, Christy Jordan of Durham, NC, Tessa Zimmerman of Boulder, CO, Olivia Zimmerman of Windham, CT, Samantha Zimmerman of Randolph, NJ and Jack Zimmerman of Hoboken, NJ, 5 great grandchildren, and a brother, Richard Phelps of Conroe, TX. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman, and her brother, Harley Phelps, Jr.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral service for Mary Jane Phelps Zimmerman will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 15, 2026, at the 2nd Congregational Church in South Williamstown. Burial will follow in the New Ashford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the upkeep and repair of Mary's childhood schoolhouse in New Ashford.
