John A. P. Bernardo, 78

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Feb. 19, 1948, John A. P. Bernardo, 78, the smallest baby in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, was born.
Bernardo entered the world determined to overcome. He spent a lifetime working to do so, remaining headstrong and strong-willed until his passing on March 13, 2026.
He was the beloved son of Anthony P. and Theresa R. (Pintavalle) Bernardo. The only child, his parents treasured him. John was also a favorite nephew of his many aunts and uncles. When his parents took ill, he embraced the role of caregiver.
In his lifetime, he fulfilled many roles: son, nephew, cousin, husband, partner, father, grandfather, and mentor. His most prominent role, however, was attorney-at-law. His law office, complete with some of the kindest secretaries, was where he tended to his passion for the U.S. Constitution. He championed the underdog, worked to speak for those who needed their voice amplified, and he strove continually to root out injustices. He truly believed every person deserved someone who would defend them voraciously, and that people are innocent until proven guilty.
He found rare solace as a communicant of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph.
He leaves behind his daughters and grandchildren, many cousins and extended family, as well as friends. Cara and Gianna were fortunate to know him at his best and most loving. He also leaves a community he wanted to make better - one where his quest for liberty and justice for all took place for much of his life.
Dery Funeral Home in Pittsfield has been entrusted with his final arrangements. He will be laid to rest beside his parents in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John's memory to the Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph or to a charity of your choice.
