Leo A. Romanos, Jr. 74

ADAMS, Mass. —

Leo A. Romanos Jr. of Adams, passed away peacefully on May 7th with his family at his side, after enduring six years of the effects of early-onset dementia. In the last years of his life, Leo was under the exceptional care of the fantastic team at North Adams Commons, whose efforts were a blessing to his family.

Born July 24, 1951, in Adams to Leo A. Romanos Sr. and Thelma (Johnson) Romanos, Leo was a graduate of Adams Memorial High School, where he played basketball and captained the golf team. Leo’s passion for golf began at a very young age. His win at the Allied Juniors Tournament in 1966 was the first of many county and local titles.

A lifelong member of Forest Park Country Club, he won the Men’s Club Championship an impressive twelve times. Leo was an avid supporter of the game and proudly served as Club President and on the Board of Directors for many years. In 2021, his peers celebrated his contributions by naming the FPCC Men’s Club Championship trophy in his honor.

Leo began his career at General Electric in Pittsfield, where he completed the elite Financial Management Leadership Program. He worked for GE, General Dynamics, and Martin Marietta for 33 years, eventually retiring from Crane & Co. in Dalton in 2014. A devout communicant of the former St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Leo served as the Christmas Bazaar Chairman and as a Eucharistic Minister. He continued these roles at St. John Paul II Parish and volunteered with the Meals Ministry Program.

Above all, Leo was a family man—generous, kind, and willing to do anything for those he loved. He is survived by his wife, the former Anne Marie Simonelli, whom he married on August 10, 1980. He is deeply mourned by his sons and their families: Joseph Romanos and his partner Justin Brown of Florence, MA; and Andrew Romanos, his wife Casey (Reardon) Romanos, and granddaughter Riley Romanos of Orlando, FL. Being Giddoo to Riley was the title Leo cherished most.

Leo is survived by his sister, Gail Bryson of Blackstone, MA; his sisters- and brothers-in-law Lucy Milette, Anthony and Gina Simonelli, and Jo Ann and Chris Nelson. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law Richard Milette and Richard Bryson. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews, many of whom joined their Uncle Leo on the golf course. Sharing in this loss are lifelong friends Rick Berti, Bob Morin, and Bob Murray, each of whom supported Leo’s family in countless ways following his diagnosis.

The funeral procession will begin on Thursday, May 14th at 10:00 A.M. at the PACIOREK FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. in Notre Dame des Sept Douleurs Church, Adams.

Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams.

Calling hours are Wednesday from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Leo’s memory to the future champions at Hoosac Valley High School Golf, 125 Savoy Rd., Cheshire, MA 01225 and/or Hospice Care in the Berkshires, 877 South St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

Anne & Family,
I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of Leo. I know you've all been through hell already with that dreaded dementia. I was so blessed to have worked with Leo at Crane. We often hiked the boulders during our lunch breaks. Leo sure loved his family and golf. I am a better person for knowing Leo, and I'm going to cherish those memories greatly.

I'm so sorry for your loss as well as the challenges you've endured the past few years. You all deserved so much more in his retirement - but this (along with my dad's challenges) reminds me of why it's important to cherish day.

Sending my love and condolences to everyone hurting right now.
