Julius Cookis, 82

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  Julius Cookis, 82 of North Adams, MA passed away on June 2, 2026 at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born on November 1, 1943, to Samuel and Ruth Cookis, he was a cherished husband, father, grandfather and brother and his presence will be deeply missed.

Julius was a hardworking man who built his life on steady effort and quiet devotion. Over the years, he gave his time and talents to Jack and Harry’s, National Auto, Scarafoni Ford and Bedard Brothers, where a job done right was the only kind worth doing. Once a Marine, always a Marine.

At the center of his life was his beloved wife, Dale, to whom he was married for 61 years- a partnership of rare devotion through every season of life. A loyal fan to the end, Julius also loved nothing more than settling in to watch his Boston Red Sox.

Julius is survived by his son, Ross Cookis (Melissa) of Chicopee, MA; his son, Mark Cookis (Robin) of Pittsfield, MA; his daughter, Stacy Simpson (Roger) of North Adams, MA; and his daughter in law, Laura Cookis of Pittsfield, MA. He also leaves Holly Cookis Michaelson of Delmar, NY, whom he thinks of as a daughter and Heidi Blake his caregiver and friend. He is further survived by his sister, Riva Freelander (Joel); eight grandchildren, Kendra Bradley, Emma Cookis, Quinton Cookis, Trinity Onrubia Cookis, Makailey Cookis, Roger Simpson, Jack Simpson and Sara Simpson; and fifteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dale Cookis and his brothers, Herbert Cookis and Macy Cookis.

Julius will be remembered for his hard work, his loyalty, his quick wit and well- timed dad jokes, and his deep love for the family he built.

I grew up around the corner on Brook Terrace from Chase ave where Julius and his family lived. We, the neighborhood kids, would routinely play whiffle ball on Chase Ave right in front of where the Cookis' resided. At this time, I believe Julius was in around 30. Julius would come out and, If we needed a whiffle ball player to even out the teams, he would gladly step in and become our designated player. What a fantastic guy! Later, I would stop down at Jack and Harry's and talk with him for a bit while on a run, if I was back in town--He was special and he will be missed.

So sorry to hear of Julius passing. I was recently going through my pictures and came across my 1st wedding picture when I married Junior Blay back in 1968. Julius was such a handsome young guy and he was an usher in our wedding party. I always thought of him as a good guy. So sorry for your family.

I remember Julius well. On summer nights back in the '50's kids from Brooklin St. area and kids from North Holden/Liberty Sts. would converge in a small open field off North Holden St. that we called '"Estes." We played sand lot baseball, with the older kids making sure we younger ones were all included. Great times. Julius and his brothers were a key part of the gang. Thanks for the memories, Julius. RIP!

Julius and I went through grade school at Freeman School. We first met in 1954 getting our appendixes out at the old North Adams Hospital. We were 10. He always remembered our experience. He was a real good person and has left quite a legacy of family. My best to you all in the time of your loss.
