Richard W. Wells

Richard W. Wells, 63, of 1315 North St. died Wednesday at North Adams Regional Hospital after an apparent heart attack. Born in Cheshire on April 12, 1938, son of Wilmarth and Angeline Jeffrion Wells, he attended Cheshire schools and was a 1956 graduate of the former Adams Memorial High School. He also graduated from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts, where he received a degree in forestry. He became a registered land surveyor in 1978. He became employed in 1973 with Henry C. Neff Associates in Adams and in 1983 purchased the firm, which he still owned and operated at the time of his death. Mr. Wells was a member of the Windsor Historical Society and a former member of the Windsor Planning Board. He enjoyed wood- and metalworking, and was active in blacksmithing. He also enjoyed the outdoors and target shooting. His wife, the former Irene A. Trottier, whom he married Jan. 26, 1957, died Sept. 16, 2000. He leaves a son, Timothy R. Wells of Windsor; a brother, Gregory N. Wells of North Adams, and three grandchildren. A daughter, Wendy Jean Wells, died April 12, 1995. The funeral will be Monday, March 18, at 1 at DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, with the Rev. William D. Furey officiating. Burial of Mr. Well's cremated remains will take place at a later date. There wil be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Wells may be made to the Windsor Historical Society or to the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department in care of the funeral home.
