Silvio Macchi Jr.

Silvio P. Macchi Jr., 48, of 50 Reed St. died yesterday at Fairview Hospital. Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 25, 1954, son of Silvio P. Macchi Sr. and Theresa Kot Macchi, he was a 1972 graduate of Monument Mountain Regional High School. He was also enrolled in the golf management course at Stockbridge School, a division of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was a greenskeeper at the former Searles Castle Golf Course, golf courses in the state of Florida, Egremont Country Club, Greenock Country Club in Lee, and was a superintendent and head groundskeeper at the Pontoosuc Golf Course. While in Florida, he also worked as an EMT. He was formerly employed at Boyds Converting Co. He was employed at Ried Cleaners at the time of his death. In his younger years, he pitched for the Great Barrington Little League, Babe Ruth and the Monument Mountain Spartans. An accomplished curve ball pitcher, he attained the nickname "Bender." He was a member of the pitch league at the James A. Modolo VFW Post. He also enjoyed bowling and won a Massachusetts state championship at the former Bowlero Bowling Leagues. He enjoyed gardening and reading organic gardening material. He enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, wathcing Nascar races and scuba diving in Florida. Besides his parents of Great Barrington, he leaves a brother, Richard J. Macchi of Great Barrington; three sisters, Rosemarie A. Baumann and Katy A. Macchi, both of Great Barrington, and Elizabeth A. Macchi of Ashley Falls. He also leaves one nephew, five nieces, many aunts, uncles and cousins and his best friend, "Bear." Services will be Monday, March 25, at 9 a.m. from BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME to be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Peter's Church with the Rev. William Wallis, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.
