Karl Cooper Sr.

Karl G. "Candy" Cooper Sr., 81, formerly of Cherry Hill Road, died yesterday afternoon at the Great Barrington Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility, where he had resided since March 2001. Born in Stockbridge on June 23, 1920, son of Edward and Edith Bechtel Cooper, he graduated from the former Williams High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was employed by Berkshire Hills Regional School District in the maintenance department until his retirement. Prior to that, he was employed by the Stockbridge Highway Department for 10 years, eight as highway superintendent. He also had worked in construction. He was a member of James A. Modolo Post 8348 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled Veterans of America. He enjoyed gardening and ice fishing. He also picked blueberries and made pies for his friends and family. His wife, the former Helen Davlin, whom he married in 1955, died Feb. 15, 1985. He leaves a son, Karl G. Cooper Jr. of West Stockbridge; two daughters, Donna Tyer of Lee and Catherine Cooper of Stockbridge; two brothers, Gerald Cooper of Glendale and Andrew Cooper of Florida; and a sister, Charolette Filkins of Pittsfield. He was predeceased by his sister, Marjorie Wallace, and two brothers, Frederick and William Cooper. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 23, at noon at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME. Burial will follow in Stockbridge Village Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 10 until the time of the service . Memorial contributions may be made to James A.
