Marcia Doran

Marcia Doran, 61, of 672 Barbour St., director of Hospice of Northern Berkshire, died yesterday at home of cancer. Born in North Adams on Oct. 23, 1940, daughter of Carlton and Ruth Bates Green, she graduated from Drury High School in 1958. She received an associate's degree as a medical assistant in 1960 from Becker Junior College in Leicester. She then studied at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and received a certificate in electroencephalography in 1962. She also received a bachelor of science degree in sociology from the former North Adams State College in 1985, and earned a master's degree in social work from Smith College in 1987. She also held certificates from the Academy of Certified Social Workers as a diplomat in clinical social work; was certified in end-of-life care at Smith College in 2001, and also held an advanced certificate in case management from Smith. She was a licensed social worker in Massachusetts and Vermont. Mrs. Doran was the director of the Hospice Program at the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of Northern Berkshire from 1993 until her death. She also had been a social worker for several years at Berkshire Center for Families and Children and had taught social work as an adjunct professor at Berkshire Community College, both in Pittsfield. Mrs. Doran was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and a former member of its vestry. She also was a member of the Ethics Committee at North Adams Regional Hospital, the board of Hospice Federation of Massachusetts and the National Association of Social Workers. She was a notary public for Massachusetts. Her work in hospice care, and her shift from caregiver to client because of her cancer, was the subject of an Eagle article published Feb. 19. She and her husband, Henry G. Doran, celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary Nov. 22. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, William Edward Doran of Barrington, Ill., and John Henry Doran of Elmira, N.Y.; a daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Doran of Boston; a brother, Robert Green of North Adams, and two grandchildren. The funeral for Marcia Green Doran will be Wednesday at 10 from AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 46 North Church St., North Adams, followed by a Requiem Eucharist at 11 at St. John's Episcopal Church, celebrated by the Rev. Donald G. Place, rector. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to "Marcia's Mission," an endowment fund for VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire, through the funeral home.
