Clinton J. Frissell

Clinton J. Frissell, 90, of 40 Bingham St. died yesterday at Springside of Pittsfield. Born in Hinsdale on Aug. 18, 1911, son of Thomas A. and Grace Jordan Frissell, he attended schools there and graduated from the former Dalton High School. He also graduated from Northeastern University in Boston in 1935 with a degree in business administration. While at Northeastern, he was a member of Sigma Phi Alpha. Mr. Frissell was a third-generation owner and operator of Frissell Market and General Store on Main Street and, later, on Maple Street until 1970. After 30 years in that business, opened Frissell's Coin-Op Laundromat, which he operated until 1997. He worked for GE in Pittsfield for five years until retiring in 1976. He also had driven a school bus for five years and was involved in real estate. He owned several apartments and commercial buildings as well as a large greenhouse. An active member of Hinsdale Congregational Church, he served on most of the committees and held many positions. He was the second person to attain the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 21, Boy Scouts of America in Hinsdale. He was awarded his 50-year medal as a member and past master of Globe Lodge of Masons in 2001. His wife, the former Ruth Fentner, whom he married April 25, 1936, in Zion's Lutheran Church in Pittsfield, died in 1996. He leaves a son, Peter A. Frissell of Hinsdale; three daughters, Linda C. Kahn of Lakewood Ranch, Fla., Sally J. Frissell of Marblehead and Donna S. Frissell of Boston, and two grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 2 at Hinsdale Congregational Church by the Rev. Michele Cijka. Burial will be in Maple Street Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, Monday, from 4 to 7 at BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 525 Main St., Dalton. Memorial donations are suggested for Hinsdale Congregational Church.
