Gerald T. Ronan

Gerald Timothy Ronan, 80, of 65 Hathaway St. died Wednesday at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in North Adams on Aug. 30, 1921, son of Michael and Catherine Murphy Ronan, he attended North Adams schools, including the former St. Joseph's Parochial Grammar School. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 1940, and attended the former Bliss Business College in North Adams. He was a World War II Army veteran and served as a corporal with the 748th Field Artillery Battalion. Mr. Ronan was employed by Sprague Electric Co. and the former Gavaert Film Co. in Williamstown. He was most recently employed as a cost analyst at the General Electric ordnance division in Pittsfield for 37 years, retiring in 1982. He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. He was a friend of the Council on Aging where he assisted members in the preparation of their tax returns. In his younger years, he was an assistant basketball coach for the St. Joseph's High School basketball team and was a basketball coach for the North Adams Summer Basketball Leagues. He enjoyed playing softball in his younger years and was a member of the semi-professional softball team in North Adams. He leaves his wife of 56 years, the former Lorraine Mahar, whom he married Dec. 26, 1945, in Notre Dame Church; two daughters, Mary Ronan of Holden and Cathleen M. Ronan of Watertown; four sons, Daniel A. Ronan of Hackettstown, N.J., Peter R. Ronan of North Adams, Michael B. Ronan of Uxbridge and Timothy D. Ronan of Watertown, and five grandchildren. Funeral services will take place Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, North Adams. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, are Friday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Memorial donations are suggested for the VNA and Hospice of Northern Berkshire or to the St. Francis Church Building Fund through the funeral home.
