Olive M. Stanley

Olive M. Stanley, 90, formerly of Heaton Court, died Friday at Laurel Lake Nursing Center in Lee, where she had resided since May 2000. Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 28, 1911, daughter of Harold F. and Pearl Manning Wells, she attended Dalton schools and graduated from the former Dalton High School. She graduated as a registered nurse from the former Henry W. Bishop Memorial School of Nursing in Pittsfield, where she was valedictorian of the class of 1929. Mrs. Stanley worked as a nurse for 15 years and then was employed by the state of New York as an administrator for the Department of Education, retiring in 1976. She resided in the Albany, N.Y., area after her marriage, and moved to Dover, Del., then Kinderhook, N.Y., after retiring. She moved to Stockbridge in 1985. She crocheted hundreds of hats to give to the children's orphanage in Springfield. She enjoyed playing bridge and the organ. Her husband, Samson F. Stanley, whom she married in 1932 in Nassau, N.Y., died Nov. 15, 1983. She leaves two daughters, Joyce Monachina of Lee and Margaret Newbold of Ocean Shores, Wash.; two sisters, Dorothy Pomeroy of Eugene, Ore., and Monica Holcomb of Pittsfield; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by a daughter, Faye Larraway, in 1955, and a son, Samson F. Stanley Jr., who died at the age of 11 weeks. The funeral will be conducted Monday, May 20, at 11 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. George Abosamora, pastor of United Methodist Church of Lenox. The family will receive friends Monday, May 20, from 10 until the time of the service. Donations may be made in Mrs. Stanley's memory to HospiceCare in the Berkshires through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
