William S. Lis

William S. "Jock" Lis, 84, of 1027 Main St., Housatonic, formerly of 17 Kirk St., died yesterday at Fairview Commons. Born in Great Barrington on Oct. 16, 1917, son of Joseph and Virginia Zdun Lis, he attended local schools. A World War II Army veteran, he served as a staff sergeant with the 77th Infantry Division, known as the Statue of Liberty Division. He served in Guam, Tinian and Saipan, and received several decorations, including the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star. Mr. Lis was employed as a boxmaker in the finishing room at Rising Paper Co. He retired in 1982 with 43 years of service. He was a communicant of All Saints' Church and a lifetime member of Adams-Budz Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8183. He enjoyed sports and was an avid golfer. His wife of 52 years, the former Victoria B. Kania, died Oct. 26, 1998. He leaves a son, Robert W. Lis, with whom he resided; a brother, Francis "Butch" Lis of Great Barrington; two sisters, Sophie Woitkowski of Pittsfield and Sadie Smith of Lee; two grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. The funeral will be tomorrow, June 1, at 9:15 from BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at All Saints' Church by the Rev. Anthony Jutt. Burial will be in St. Bridget's Cemetery. Family will receive friends today, May 31, from 4 to 7.
