George Corio

George Corio, 86, of 15 Prospect St. died Sunday at Craneville Place of Dalton, where he had resided for two years. Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 4, 1915, son of Arnolfo and Angela Maria Omegha Corio, he attended schools in Italy. An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a staff sergeant in Burma and China. Mr. Corio was employed as a shipper at GE in Pittsfield for 25 years, retiring in 1975. He had been employed by the Wendell House and at other area restaurants at one time. He was a communicant of North American Martyrs Church and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs. He also was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, the Lanesboro Senior Center and the American Association of Retired Persons. He enjoyed gardening and playing his accordion. An avid bocce player, he had built his own bocce court. He and his wife, the former Elizabeth Frey, celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary Jan. 10. He besides his wife, he leaves two stepsons, Donald L. Shaw of Bristow, Va., and Peter L. Shaw of Hobe Sound, Fla.; a son, David A. Corio of Port Allegany, Pa.; a brother, Mario Corio of Torino, Italy; 11 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Rosa Ricalzone, who died in 2001. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, June 5, at 10 at North American Martyrs Church by the Rev. David Raymond, pastor. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. The family would like Mr. Corio's friends to meet with them at Harrington's Restaurant in Lanesboro following the funeral Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lanesboro Senior Center or to North American Martyrs Church in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
