John H. Wells II

John Hoxie Wells II, 83, of 6 Wells Park Drive died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center. He was a former member of the Cemetery Committee. Born in Cheshire on April 2, 1917, son of Ray B. and Nina Hathway Wells, he attended schools in Cheshire and in Adams and was a 1935 graduate of the former Adams High School. He was employed by GE before entering the Army on April 28, 1942. He landed in England on Oct. 8, 1944, and served in Germany and Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge before being injured and hospitalized in England. He was transferred to Fort Edwards Convalescence Camp and was discharged May 23, 1945. Mr. Wells was a self-employed painter for many years. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a charter member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Italian-American War Veterans, and the 732 R.O. and 3rd Army 742 M.P. battalions. A lifelong Republican, he served as committee chairman for 20 years in Cheshire. He enjoyed animals and flowers. He and his wife, the former Mae E. Wiseman, celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary Oct. 5. Besides his wife, he leaves a sister, Eileen Wells Nuttall of Cheshire. The funeral will be Thursday at 1 at First Baptist Church of Cheshire, with the Rev. Linda Shaw, pastor, officiating. Burial with full military rites will be held in the spring at Cheshire Cemetery. Calling hours at DERY-CHESHIRE FUNERAL HOME, 121 North State Road, Cheshire, will be Wednesday from 4 to 8. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Cheshire in care of the funeral home. Mr. Wells is also survived by four nephews, Bruce W. and Alan R. Nuttall, and Rodney R. and Douglas P. Wells, and a niece, Ronalyn Wells Cooley. He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Wells in 1930, and two brothers, Ronald H. Wells in 1980 and Robert O. Wells in 1981.
