Kathryn M. Bowes

Kathryn M. Bowes, 89, of 842 Curran Highway, former administrative nursing supervisor at North Adams Regional Hospital, died Tuesday at Sweet Brook Health Care Center in Williamstown. She was the wife of the late James A. Bowes, who served as mayor of North Adams. Born in North Adams on May 6, 1911, daughter of James M. and Alice O'Neill Horan, she attended North Adams schools and graduated from Drury High School in 1929. She also graduated from the former North Adams Hospital School of Nursing in 1932 and from the Bellevue School of Nursing of Affiliation of Pediatrics and Medicine in New York City. Mrs. Bowes was employed as a private duty nurse for 10 years and returned to North Adams in 1949. She was then employed as a nurse at North Adams Regional Hospital as a staff nurse and also worked as head nurse before assuming the position of administrative nursing supervisor of nursing services. She retired in 1983. She was a longtime communicant of St. Francis Church and a member of the Massachusetts Nursing Association. In 1982, she received the Helping Hands award from the local chapter of the March of Dimes as the Nurse of the Year in Berkshire County. Her husband, a longtime city solicitor and a Berkshire County commissioner for whom the Probate Court building was named, died May 12, 1980. They were married Oct. 13, 1979, in St. Francis of Assisi Church. She leaves a sister, Helen Grover of Lenox. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, North Adams. Burial will follow in the family plot in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours at the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, are Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Memorial donations are suggested for the charity of the donor's choice through the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. She was predeceased by two brothers and a sister, James Michael Horan, John Joseph Horan and Alice St. Pierre, R.N.
