Clara Shakar, 78

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Clara Shakar, 78, of 26 Versailles Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. Born in Adams on June 26, 1924, daughter of Nicholas and Eva Fuscia Baliakos, she graduated from the former Adams Memorial High School. Mrs. Shakar was employed for 40 years by the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams, retiring in 1988. She first worked at the former Brightwater Paper Co. in Adams. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Church. She was a member of the Sprague Electric Quarter-Century Club and, when she was younger, the Sprague bowling, softball and basketball teams. She was also a member of the Rhythm Belles Line Dancing Group at the Harper Center in Williamstown. She leaves her husband, George Shakar, whom she married Oct. 8, 1949, in St. Francis of Assisi Church; one son, Richard George Shakar and his wife, Diane, of Ballston Lake, N.Y.; a sister, Patricia Altiere of North Adams; two grandchildren, Nicole Marie Shakar and Shawn Richard Shakar and his wife, Amy, of Clifton Park, N.Y., and a great-grandson, Patrick Shakar. She was predeceased by a son, George Shakar Jr., on Aug. 22, 1957, and her brother, Peter Baliakos. FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Mrs. Shakar will take place Monday at 10 at the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at Our Lady of Mercy Church, State Road. Burial will follow in the family plot in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 4 to 8. Memorial donations are suggested for the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center through the funeral home.
