Richard Inglis Jr

Richard Inglis Jr., 90, died Tuesday morning at Fairview Commons Nursing Home in Great Barrington. He was the father of Dr. Alan Inglis of Great Barrington. Born Dec. 7, 1912, in Cleveland, son of Richard and Marion Coale Inglis, he graduated from Hawken High School in Cleveland, then attended Harvard University, where he captained the tennis team and graduated summa cum laude in 1933. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1939. In Cleveland, he was a partner at Arter, Hadden, Wyokff and Van Duzer law firm, retiring in 1972. He was a nationally ranked tennis player in the 1930s. When he was 50, he began running and ran in 20 marathons, the last one when he was 75. He was an enthusiastic square dancer and loved to sing, mostly popular songs from the 1930s and 1940s. He leaves his wife of 65 years, the former Anne Bowen Edwards, whom he married on March 27, 1937. Besides his son, he leaves three other sons, Richard Inglis III of Walla Walla, Wash., James Inglis of Bridport, Vt., and Andrew Inglis of Concord; two daughters, Virginia Inglis of Newton and Elizabeth Inglis of Hoboken, N.J.; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Richard Inglis Jr. died Jan. 14, 2003. He also leaves his daughters-in-law Marion, Carolyn, Peggy and Elizabeth; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial ceremony will be held later in the spring.
