Hazel L. Murphy

Hazel L. Murphy, 95, formerly of High Street, Housatonic, died yesterday at Fairview Hospital. She had resided at Great Barrington Healthcare since 1998. Born in New Marlboro on Aug. 2, 1907, daughter of Harry N. and Bertha L. Keyes Knight, she attended Mill River schools. Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Murphy had been employed by the former Rising Paper Co. and later by the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge. A communicant of Corpus Christi Church, she was a member of its Rosary Society and assisted with its annual bazaar. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and making jewelry, and made crafts for the bazaars at area nursing homes. Her husband, William C. Murphy, whom she married Dec. 22, 1926, died Feb. 23, 1980. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Hazel L. Murphy, who died Feb. 8, 2003, will be at a time to be announced. Burial will be in the spring in Mill River Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 4 to 7 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. She leaves 10 grandchildren, William J. Briggs Sr., Cheryl L. Ovitt, Pat A. Bradway, Timothy A. Briggs, James A. Briggs, Frank A. Briggs, Gina Briggs Deane, Carmella M. Hall, Deborah Dakers and Loriann Moro; 16 great-grandchildren, Dawn O'Neil, Garry P. Ovitt Jr., Chelsea Bradway Francis, William, Adam, Raymond, Dustin, James and Jonathan Briggs, Robert J. C. Deane, Tina Hall, Taylor and Makenze Dakers, Christopher Joyce, Ashley and Steven Larkin, and two great-great-grandchildren, Blake and Alyssa Ovitt. She was also predeceased by a brother, Frank Knight, and a sister, Dorothy Hall.
