Karl Langenback

Karl J. "Gus" Langenback, 64, of 111 Lanesboro Road, Cheshire, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 27, 1937, a son of the late Frank E. and Leah (Rando) Langenback. He attended schools in Lanesboro and attended Old Stone School in Lanesboro. He served in the Seabee branch of the U.S. Navy. While in the service he served in Africa and Antarctica, where he was part of the first expedition to create a weather station in 1957. He also served in the Naval Reserves in Pittsfield. He was a member of the Lanesboro Volunteer Fire Department. He worked for the Massachusetts State Department of Parks and Recreation as a supervisor in Clarksburg, Savoy, Greylock and Windsor state parks. He spent much of his time as a ranger for the Mount Greylock State Reservation. He was an avid trainer of horses, specifically Mustangs, with his son, Peter. He leaves four sons, Paul R. Langenback of Stamford, Vt., Peter J. Langenback of North Adams, Kristian K. Langenback of Elsmere, Dela., and Dennis L. Langenback of Middletown, Dela.; a daughter, Christina Langenback of Pittsfield; two brothers, Frank Langenback of Cheshire and Leo Langenback of Sparta, Tenn.; four sisters, Irene Lefebrve of Adams, Rita Cummings of Pittsfield, Lea Mae Speth of the state of Florida and Dorothy Clairmont of Lanesboro; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons, Karl J. Langenback in 1998 and Dale Langenback in 1965. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2001, at 4 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Adams, with the Rev. Jane Dunning, interim pastor, officiating. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family. Calling hours at the Dery-Cheshire Funeral Home, 121 North State Road, Cheshire, will be Sunday, March 11, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his memory may be made to the Stamford, Vt., Volunteer Fire Department through the funeral home.
