Daniel E. Lewis

Daniel E. Lewis, 89, of 4 First Ave. died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 6, 1911, son of Harry and Alice Buckley Lewis, he attended Berkshire and Lanesboro schools and Pittsfield High School. Mr. Lewis was employed as an automobile mechanic for more than 40 years at several area firms, including Pittsfield Tire & Battery and the former Shapiro Motors on North Street. He retired after a combined 40 years of service. He was a communicant of North American Martyrs' Church. He and his wife, the former Esther Rhinehart, celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary Oct. 15. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mary A. Connor of Berkshire and Kathleen E. Hook of Pittsfield; a sister, Hazel Van Korb of Largo, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Carolyn A. Atwell, died Aug. 1, 1997. Calling hours at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be TODAY from 3 to 7. The funeral will be tomorrow (TUESDAY) at 9 from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at North American Martyrs' Church celebrated by the Rev. John Smegal, pastor. Burial will be in Cheshire Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to North American Martyrs Church or to the Cheshire Fire Department EMS in care of the funeral home.
