Dorothy E.Hassley Boyle

Dorothy E.Hassley Boyle, 93, born 31 December 1906 in West Springfield, Massachusetts, daughter of Phillip J. and Cecelia Navin Hassley. Died Monday at Laurel Lake Center in Lee, MA. Educated at Holy Name grade schools and a graduate in 1923 from Cathedral High School in Springfield. A graduate of Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, class Of 1927. Married 23 June 1928 to John V. Boyle In Our Lady’s Chapel at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. He died Aug. 28, 1969. During the early 30’s, was active in the development of Colonial Village on Maple Road, Longmeadow, Mass. Mrs. Boyle planned all interior and exterior decorating and had write-ups in various magazines. This was just as the FHA was developing and pictures of the houses were shown throughout the U.S. Because 70% of the land for Westover Field was settled by Mr. Boyle, he was asked to establish an appraisal section for the Dept. of Justice in Washington, D.C., for which he was made Chief. He retired in 1963. While in Washington, DC., Mrs. Boyle was secretary for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and wrote a weekly column for the Washington Post under the title, “On The Move”, which during the ‘Camelot Years’ covered the comings and goings of Cabinet Officers and Military Personnel. Mrs. Boyle was also active in real estate sales and restored ten houses as well as being Vice-President of Women Realtors. Upon Mr. Boyle’s death, in August of 1969, Mrs. Boyle retired to a summer home in Richmond, Massachusetts, where she resided until her death. Mrs. Boyle established a scholarship in Richmond in the name of Sarah McDonald, a prominent teacher for many years. She also donated 2 park benches to the Tennis Mothers and was among the first members of the Richmond Land Trust, donating 11 acres of vacant land on Route 41. Mrs. Boyle was a member of the Pittsfield Women’s Club, and also of the Tuesday Club on Stockbridge. She is survived by 3 nieces and a nephew; Mrs. Jeanne Hassley Obermark of St. Charles, Missouri, Mrs. Dorothy Cavenaugh Miller of San Diego, California, Mrs. Cecelia Cavenaugh Telsey of Forest Hills, New York, and Mr. Michael T. Cavenaugh of Tampa, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richmond Volunteer Fire Department, Richmond Ambulance Squad or Richmond Community Health in care of the funeral home. Funeral services of Mrs. Dorothy E. Boyle, will be held Wednesday, at 10:15 AM from DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at Saint Mark’s Church in Pittsfield, celebrated by the Rev. William Eckert. Burial will be in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery, West Stockbridge, MA at the convenience of the family. Calling hours at DERY FUNERAL HOME, will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 PM.
