Martin John Emerson

Martin John Emerson, 72, former wiring inspector for Dalton and Hinsdale, died yesterday at his home in Albany, Ga., where he moved following his retirement. Born in Hinsdale on Nov. 20, 1930, son of Charles W. and Caroline Adams Emerson, he attended Hinsdale and Pittsfield schools, graduating from Pittsfield High School in 1948. Mr. Emerson was the wiring inspector for Dalton and Hinsdale for 11 years, from 1986 to 1997. He had owned and operated Emerson Electricians since the early 1950s. Mr. Emerson was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Dalton and was a former officer of the Exchange Club of Pittsfield for many years. He was a 44-year member of Unity Lodge of Masons AF&AM in Dalton, where he served on the board of directors of the Unity Lodge Corp. and was instrumental in establishing the Masonic Building at 45 North St., Dalton. He married the late Dorothy Poland Bergeron on Oct. 3, 1957, in Dalton. He leaves his wife, the former Shirley Duane Josey, whom he married in Albany, Ga. Besides his wife, he leaves four sisters, Lucile E. Mason of Dalton, Theda E. Elwell of Spring Hill, Fla., Priscilla E. Harris of Conway and Esther E. Boraski of Hinsdale; a brother, Alvah P. Emerson of West Cummington; a stepdaughter, B. Anne Petersen of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and two grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Martin J. Emerson was predeceased by a stepson, Fred Bergeron, and brothers Emory A., Charles G. and Joseph Clemons Emerson, and sisters Doris E. Sears and Caroline M. Hathaway. He is also survived by 32 nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held in Albany, Ga., on Saturday at 1 at the Hall & Hall Chapel. Interment will be in Albany, Ga. A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Dalton at a time to be announced. The omission of flowers is requested.
