Gretchen C. Hayden

Gretchen C. Hayden, 88, of Park Street North died early Saturday morning at home. Born in Great Barrington on Sept. 30, 1914, daughter of George M. and Grace Van Deusen Hall, she was a graduate of the former Searles High School. She attended Fort Hayes State in Kansas for one year before returning to Great Barrington. Mrs. Hayden was employed by the former This and That Shop and the Otis Ridge Ski Shop. She also drove a school bus for many years. She was a member of the Great Barrington Garden Club, where she assisted in the annual plantings on Main Street, and the Lenox Croquet Club. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years, a volunteer at the former Berkshire Garden Center, and taught swimming at Lake Mansfield, at her home and at the Girl Scout Camp. She performed with the former Cobble and Barrington Players. She enjoyed playing bridge and skiing. She and her husband, George D. Hayden, would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary June 6. They were married in Housatonic. Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Patricia Hayden of Great Barrington, and a grandson. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Gretchen Hayden, who died March 15, 2003, will be conducted later in the spring. She also leaves her grandson, Daniel Lahert. She was predeceased by two sisters, Phoebe Hall and Barbara Hyde, and a nephew, Donald Hyde.
