Alfonso Barbarotta

Alfonso F. Barbarotta, 79, of 14 Parker St. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on July 2, 1921, son of Guiseppe F. and Maria Ferrente Barbarotta, he attended local schools and was a 1939 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. Mr. Barbarotta was employed as a house painter for the last 45 years, retiring from his own business in 1993. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and an alumnae of the Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and enjoyed gardening and collected coins. He also enjoyed helping and watching his children in their sports endeavors. His wife, the former Alvera A. Bianchi, whom he married April 6, 1947, died May 30, 1996. He leaves six sons, Joseph P. Barbarotta of Branford, Conn., Alfonso F. Barbarotta Jr. and John L. Barbarotta, both of Trumbull, Conn., Charles M. Barbarotta of Hamden, Conn., and Vincent F.W. Barbarotta and Christopher D. Barbarotta, both of Pittsfield; four daughters, Frances A. Heidel and Tina R. Wixsom, both of Pittsfield, Sandra A. Phelps, with whom he made his home, and M. Beth Barbarotta of Lenox; four sisters, Grace M. Gans, Caroline Caperella, both of Pittsfield, Mary Corrington of Babson Park, Fla., and Angie McCarthy of California; 19 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Pittsfield Boys' and Girls' Club in care of the funeral home. He was predeceased by a brother, Bartolo Barbarotta.
