Bessie E. Pupo

Bessie E. Pupo, 90, of Underhill Place died March 7 at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on June 25, 1910, daughter of Henry C. and Martha S. Langer Stache, she attended local schools. Mrs. Pupo was employed by Eaton Paper Co. and Crane Stationary as a stock clerk. She was also employed by General Electric Co. as a file clerk. She was also a theater organ and piano enthusiast, and played as a substitute pianist in the former Spa Theatre during silent films. She was a member of the Connecticut Valley Theatre Organ Society, where she attended theater organ concerts and the American Theatre Organ Society. Mrs. Pupo was a member of the Pittsfield Animal Control Commission for several years. She and the county dog officer, the late Eleanor Sonsini, identified, cared for and fed neglected animals every week for more than 12 years. Her husband, Dominic S. Pupo, whom she married December 1928, died Feb. 9, 1944. She leaves a daughter, Barbara A. Slater of Pittsfield; two sons, Daniel J. Pupo of Cheshire and Francis H. Pupo of Pittsfield; 12 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother, Edwin Stache. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. Burial will take place in the Pittsfield Cemetery at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
