Barbara Lee

Barbara Lee, 59, of Boston, died Wednesday of ovarian cancer. She was the daughter of Ruth Lee of Pittsfield. Born in St. Paul, Minn., on July 19, 1941, daughter of Ruth Lee and the late Raymond E. Lee, she graduated from Wellesley College as a Durant scholar. She was employed as a stockbroker with the combined firm of Salomon, Smith, Barney for 27 years before becoming president of her independent company, Barbara Lee Investments. She was co-host on WGBH-FM radio in Boston of a weekly live call-in program, "On the Money," and was also a commentator on public radio station WAMC-FM of Albany, N.Y. A nationally sought-after speaker for investment seminars and talk shows, she was the author of "The Financially Independent Woman: A Step-by-Step Guide to Successful Investing," "Take Control of Your Money," and "The Woman's Guide to the Stock Market." She was featured as the cover story in the September 1983 issue of Savvy magazine and wrote a regular stock column for that publication for two years. She also represented Fortune magazine in their national advertising campaign highlighting the Business Class in 1984. She served on the board of trustees of the Pro Arts Chamber Orchestra, and was a member of the board of overseers of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and for The Handel & Haydn Society. She also enjoyed playing the drums, tennis and writing mysteries. Besides her mother, of Pittsfield, she leaves a daughter, Stephanie Jeanne Lee Gertz, and a sister, Randy Lee Comfort of Bristol, England. Memorial Services for Barbara Lee will be at the LEVINE CHAPEL, 470 Harvard St., Brookline, on Sunday, March 18, at 3 p.m. There will be no memorial week. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Mount Auburn Hospital, 330 Mount Auburn St., Cambridge, MA 02238, or to the charity of your choice.
