Barbara Hitchcock Holden

Barbara Hitchcock Holden, 80, formerly of Lee, died yesterday in Rome, Ga., of complications caused by an extended illness. Born Oct. 21, 1922, in Hudson, N.Y., daughter of Theron Hitchcock and Laura Becker Hitchcock, she grew up in Lee and graduated from the former Henry W. Bishop Memorial Nursing School in Pittsfield in 1943. She and her family moved to Rome in 1953. Mrs. Holden was an operating room and ER nurse as well as a private duty nurse. She was a volunteer at Floyd Medical Center in Rome and later an employee of the hospital. She was instrumental in helping form the Floyd Medical Center Volunteer Program, also known as the Pink Ladies. She was also instrumental in forming a nursing school at Berry College, which is now a part of Floyd College. A memorial nursing scholarship was established in her honor. In addition, she performed service for such community organizations as the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, the YMCA and the Junior Service League. Her husband, Gordon Charles “Bud” Holden, whom she married Sept. 7, 1944, died Jan. 30, 2000. She leaves a daughter, Patricia Holden Mozley of Marietta, Ga.; two sons, Peter Duncan Holden of Rome and William Hitchcock Holden of Marietta; two brothers, Theodore Hitchcock of Baltimore and Richard Hitchcock of Lee; three sisters, Ruth Hayden and Dorothy Bleivik of Lee and Carol Savery of Pittsfield; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service will be held Monday, April 28, at 3 at First Baptist Church, Rome, with Dr. Joel Snider and Mrs. Holden’s nephew, Dr. David Bleivik, officiating. The family will receive friends at DANIEL’S FUNERAL HOME Sunday from 4 to 6 and Monday after the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Barbara Holden Memorial Nurses Scholarship Fund, Floyd College, P.O. Box 1864, Rome, GA 30162-1864, or The Floyd Medical Center Volunteer Program, Floyd Medical Center Auxiliary, P.O. Box 233, Rome, GA 30162-0233. Survivors also include her daughter-in-law, Sandy Holden; her sister-in-law, Harriet Genest; three grandchildren, Patricia Holden Cooper, Erin Holden Sinclair and William Reid Holden, and great-grandson, Holden MacInnis Cooper. She was predeceased by a sister, Jane Hitchcock Defriest of Lee.
