Robert D. Allen

Robert D. Allen, 83, of Monument Valley Road died Sunday at Timberlyn Heights Nursing Center, where he had resided for two years. Born in Springfield on Sept. 6, 1919, son of Frank and Ida Emma Brown Allen, he was a graduate of Warren High School and the Worcester Boys’ Trade School. He moved to Great Barrington in 1978. A Navy veteran, he served during World War II and the Korean War. After his request in the early 1990s for a search of his service record, which included being wounded in a 1943 attack on the island of Vella Lavella in the Solomons, the Department of Defense determined that he was eligible for a second Purple Heart plus five other medals for his service in the Pacific. Mr. Allen was employed as an engineer and maintenance director for Hilton Hotels in Pittsfield and Northampton. He was a former member of First Congregational Church. A cabinetmaker, he enjoyed wood working and restoring antiques. He and his wife, the former Carolyn Hazen, were married March 21, 1942, in West Brookfield Methodist Church. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Gene Allen of Great Barrington and Bruce Allen of Malden; a daughter, Kay Giroux of Stoughton; two grandsons, six stepgrandchildren, 18 stepgreat-grandchildren and five stepgreat-great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Robert D. Allen will be conducted Thursday, May 8, at noon at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Charles VanAusdall, pastor of First Congregational Church. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in West Brookfield. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.
