Sallye Balter

Sallye Balter, 78, of Stevens Glen Road died Tuesday at Providence Care Center in Lenox. Born in Chicago on June 29, 1924, daughter of Jack and Edna Hohenfels Ellerstein, she moved to New York City with her family and was a graduate of Julia Richman High School. She received her bachelor’s degree at age 19 from New York University and her master’s degree in 1964 from Hofstra University. She lived in Roslyn Heights, N.Y., and was a part-time resident of the Berkshires from the 1970s until retiring here in 1986. Mrs. Balter was a school psychologist with the Port Washington (N.Y.) School District for many years, retiring in 1986. She was a former member of Knesset Israel Synagogue. She was a founding member of the former Richmond Performance Series, now MusicWorks, and remained very active with the center until recently. She enjoyed music, gardening and animals. Her husband, Sidney Balter, whom she married Oct. 31, 1943, died Aug. 10, 1993. She leaves a son, Dr. Andrew Balter of Woodbridge, Conn., and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by another son, Alan Balter, in 1998. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Sallye Balter, age 78, died May 6, 2003. She is survived by her loving son, Dr. Andrew Balter, her loving grandchildren, Allison and Jeffrey, and her daughter-in-law, Patricia Balter. In accordance with Mrs. Balter’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Sidney Balter Memorial Fund for Music Education at MusicWorks or to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
