Stanley M. Shapiro

Stanley M. Shapiro, 88, of 81 Appleton Ave., died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in North Adams on Nov. 5, 1914, son of Samuel and Annie Kronick Shapiro, he was educated in North Adams schools as well as Williston Academy in Easthampton, from which he graduated. He then graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and continued his education at Harvard University in the advanced management program. During World War II he served with the Red Cross. He was the owner/operator of the former Shapiro Motors Inc. and was active as a real estate developer in Northern Berkshire County. He was an active member of the board of directors of the Pittsfield Cooperative Bank. He was a member of Temple Anshe Amunim as well as Knesset Israel Synagogue. He leaves his wife, the former Sydelle Stone, whom he married Feb. 4, 1951; three sons, Mark L. Shapiro of Los Altos, Calif., Robert W. Shapiro of Pelham, N.Y., and Peter D. Shapiro of Walnut Creek, Calif.; his brother, Alan Shapiro of North Adams; three sisters, Rose Korn of Williamstown, Helen Maislen of Pittsfield and Lillian Glickman of North Adams, and three grandsons. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Stanley M. Shapiro, 88, who died June 19, 2003, will be held Friday at 3 at Temple Anshe Amunim, 26 Broad St., with Rabbi Dennis Ross, spiritual leader, officiating. Burial will follow in the Temple Section at Pittsfield Cemetery. He is also survived by his daughters-in-law, Barbara Shapiro and Inez Sieben, and his grandsons, Benjamin, Joseph and Vincent Shapiro. Donations may be made to Temple Anshe Amunim or Knesset Israel Synagogue in care of the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201. The family will receive at home on Saturday evening at 7:30, when there will be a shivah service, and also on Sunday from 1 to 6.
