Francis Augustine Holmes

Francis Augustine Holmes, 88, of North Andover died yesterday at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen. He was the father of Betsy Meunier of Hinsdale. Born in Methuen on Jan. 26, 1915, son of Augustine and Harriet Pfeiffer Holmes, he was a graduate of Searles High School there. Mr. Holmes had owned and operated the Middlesex Market in North Andover for about 60 years. He also operated North Andover Hardware part time for 40 years. He was a member of the New England Grocers Association and the Massachusetts Hardware Association. He was married to the former Katherine Elizabeth Gallagher. Besides his wife and daughter, he leaves a son, Richard Holmes of North Andover; two other daughters, Sue Ellen Holmes and Rosemary Draper, both of North Andover; a sister, Madeline Kelly of North Reading; five grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. He was predeceased by a son, Carey Holmes. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Francis Augustine “Frannie” Holmes, 88, of North Andover died Aug. 11, 2003. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 14, at 10 in St. Michael’s Church in North Andover. Burial will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in North Andover. Family and friends may call Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at JOHN BREEN MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME INC., 35 Merrimack St., North Andover. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. He also leaves two sons-in-law, Pete Meunier of Hinsdale and John Draper of North Andover, and several nieces and nephews.
